What Pregnant Women Need To Know About Swine Flu - Risks, Statistics, Prevention and Vaccination
I would like to share this to all everyone especially the pregnant women out there.A pregnant woman who suspects that she might have swine flu should call or see her doctor immediately. In fact the CDC even advises that pregnant women should call their doctor if they've been in close contact with anyone who has swine flu.
Facts about Swine Flu in Pregnant Women
- Up until mid-October 2009, 6% of swine flu related deaths in the US have been in pregnant women.
- Pregnant women have also been hospitalized more as a result of swine flu compared to the general population.
- Pregnant women given seasonal flu shots in a recent study passed the positive effects of immunization to their unborn child, significantly reducing flu sickness in babies younger than 6 months.
- The new H1N1 vaccine for pregnant women is currently undergoing trials to determine its safety. So far flu shots have not been deemed harmful for pregnant women.
Why are Pregnant Women at Higher Risk from Swine Flu?
Pregnant women are a high-risk group for swine flu complications because the illness may cause complications such as pneumonia and premature labor. A woman's immune system may be somewhat weakened during pregnancy, making her more susceptible to illness in general. And anything that causes a pregnant woman distress may ultimately cause fetal distress as well.
How Can Pregnant Women Prevent Getting Swine Flu?
The precautions for pregnant women are the same as for the rest of the population. The top things to do for prevention are:
- Regularly and thoroughly wash hands
- Avoid contact with people infected with swine flu
- Get a flu shot
Are Swine Flu Vaccinations Safe for Pregnant Women?
The first step in swine flu prevention is protection. Pregnant women can significantly reduce their chances of contracting swine flu by getting an annual flu shot. Flu shots for the current strain of the H1N1 flu virus are expected to be available by October 2009 for the flu season lasting through February 2010.
Pregnant women should consult with their doctor to schedule a flu shot as soon as one becomes available in their region. The CDC advises pregnant women to get two vaccinations: a seasonal flu shot combined with the H1N1 (swine flu causing) flu shot. Taken together they are more effective in protecting pregnant women and their fetus from flu-like illness. Both flu shots are regarded as safe for pregnant women to take.
What Should Pregnant Women Do if They Have Swine Flu?
The best course of action for an infected pregnant woman is to stay at home, avoid infecting others, and call or see her doctor right away. The doctor will most likely put her on anti-viral medication such as Tamiflu or Relenza. If she has a fever, she can take acetaminophen (e.g. Tylenol). A typical course of anti-viral medication runs for 5 days and can be taken anytime during pregnancy. It has not shown to have any harmful effects on the growing fetus.

21st week of pregnancy
Your Pregnancy: Week 21Twenty-one is a magic number. It means independence. It means you just won a hand of blackjack. In pregnancy terms, it means you have gotten over the hump and you only have 19 weeks left!
Your Body
Did you know that your growing belly is directly proportional to your sex drive? In other words, the bigger you get, the bigger it gets. That's a sweet way of saying that second trimester hormones can turn you into a total horn dog. (Finally a physical benefit your partner can actually appreciate.)
As long as your pregnancy is going well, engaging in a little "love me do" is perfectly safe and healthy. In a healthy pregnancy, having sex is perfectly fine.Your Baby
Chances are good you're feeling someone performing a round-off back handspring in your uterus by now. Is there any other feeling this cool? Other highlights this week:
By now your baby looks like a mini-version of what she'll look like when she's born. All her facial features are formed and hair is growing on her head. She's even acting like a baby and will occasionally suck her thumb or yawn. Aww ...
Baby's heartbeat is getting stronger and can be heard using a good old-fashioned stethoscope. Ask for a listen at your next prenatal visit! By 21 weeks, fetal bone marrow starts making blood cells—previously done by the liver and spleen. This may not sound that exciting, but it's good news.
The amniotic fluid that has been cushioning your little bean now serves another purpose: Your baby uses it to "practice" chowing down. Yes, it sounds gross (as many aspects of pregnancy do), but it's an important step for your baby toward being able to chow down in the real world. Your baby has been swallowing amniotic fluid for a while now, but now the intestines are finally developed enough that she's absorbing small amounts of sugars from it. And let's face it, being able to effectively digest sugar is important at every stage of life.
Your baby now weighs between 10 and 11 ounces and is approximately 7 inches long—the size of a delicious, cold, frothy bottle of root beer.

Should I get a flu shot while I'm pregnant?
Should I get a flu shot even though I'm pregnant? This was one of our concern when I had my Doctors appointment just recently. My OBGYN required me to get my flu shot vaccine as soon as possible. Actually she required me two (2) Flu Shots Vaccine. One is the seasonal flu shot and the other one is swine flu shot. She said, getting a flu shot is safe during my pregnancy. Just make sure tie differences are not to close to get the second vaccine. She required at least a couple of weeks before taking the second vaccine. We will try to get my first flu shot within this week and will have my second flu shot on my next appointment. For more details:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), and the World Health Organization (WHO) all recommend a flu shot for women who will be pregnant during flu season (October to mid-May). That's because if you get the flu while you're pregnant, you're more likely to have serious complications, such as pneumonia, that could put you and your baby at risk. What's more, there's evidence that getting a flu shot during pregnancy offers your baby some protection after birth: Anti-flu antibodies that you develop after getting the shot are passed to your baby, providing him with immunity that may be protective until he's 5 or 6 months old. This is important because young babies who catch the flu are at particular risk for serious illness, but they can't be vaccinated themselves until they're 6 months old. Learn more about flu shots for children. Your caregiver should offer you a flu shot at a regularly scheduled prenatal visit. If she doesn't, ask for one. Get your shot as early in the season as possible. Sometimes the vaccine is available as early as September or even late August. If you missed getting vaccinated during the fall, you can still get a shot in December or even later, although the sooner you do so the better. Keep in mind that the vaccine won't be fully effective for two weeks afterward.

Typhoon Ondoy Hits Manila Area

This are just 2 of the pictures I got from the Philippine News about the typhoon "Ondoy" that hits the area of Manila Saturday September 26, 2009. I feel so devastated of what my fellow countrymen is facing right now. A lot of them have lost their home and lives. As I was watching the news, the update was, their were 106 people died already from the typhoon and a lot of people are still missing. Until now volunteers, Military men and some organization are continuously helping our fellow Filipinos on the said tragedy. They are giving away goods for the victim of typhoon "Ondoy". Retrival operation is still on going and as the day goes by, a lot of dead bodies are being recovered. I pity for those family who lost their loved ones for this typhoon that hits their area. I hope they can survive this another tragedy that came in their lives and surpass everything. My prayers are with them. According to the news, the typhoon "Ondoy" is now approaching Vietnam area but another low pressure area is sighted on the Phillipine area of responsibility again and expected to be another typhoon that will hit the Philippines by Thursdays. Oh God please help them.

All About Pregnancy
As a first time soon to be mom, I want to learn everything connected with pregnancy. It is like I am taking a degree of becoming a parent to a child soon and hopefully will fulfill my responsibility as his/her mother. To get started, what really a pregnancy is or being pregnant:Here's some insights:
Pregnancy from the latin "graviditas" the carrying of one or more offspring, known as a fetus or embryo, inside the uterus of a female. In a pregnancy, there can be multiple gestations, as in the case of twins or triplets. Human pregnancy is the most studied of all mammalian pregnancies. Obstetrics is the surgical field that studies and cares for high risk pregnancy. Midwifery is the non-surgical field that cares for pregnancy and pregnant women.
Childbirth usually occurs about 38 weeks after conception; i.e., approximately 40 weeks from the last normal menstrual period (LNMP) in humans. The World Health Organization defines normal term for delivery as between 37 weeks and 42 weeks. The calculation of this date involves the assumption of a regular 28-day menstrual cycle.
One scientific term for the state of pregnancy is gravid, and a pregnant female is sometimes referred to as a gravida. Neither word is used in common speech. Similarly, the term "parity" (abbreviated as "para") is used for the number of previous successful live births. Medically, a woman who has never been pregnant is referred to as a "nulligravida", and in subsequent pregnancies as "multigravida" or "multiparous".Hence, during a second pregnancy a woman would be described as "gravida 2, para 1" and upon live delivery as "gravida 2, para 2." An in-progress pregnancy, as well as abortions, miscarriages, or stillbirths account for parity values being less than the gravida number, whereas a multiple birth will increase the parity value. Women who have never carried a pregnancy achieving more than 20 weeks of gestation age are referred to as "nulliparous". The medical term for a woman who is pregnant for the first time is primigravida.
The term embryo is used to describe the developing offspring during the first 8 weeks following conception, and the term fetus is used from about 2 months of development until birth.
In many societies' medical or legal definitions, human pregnancy is somewhat arbitrarily divided into three trimester periods, as a means to simplify reference to the different stages of prenatal development. The first trimester carries the highest risk of miscarriage (natural death of embryo or fetus). During the second trimester, the development of the fetus can be more easily monitored and diagnosed. The beginning of the third trimester often approximates the point of viability, or the ability of the fetus to survive, with or without medical help, outside of the uterus.Updating - 4th Blog

Cut and paste and other iPhone enhancements coming
CUPERTINO, Calif. - Apple Inc. is updating its software for iPhones so that users can cut, copy and paste text — a basic computing feature that many people had lamented was missing from the gadget that seems to do everything. At an iPhone event for journalists Tuesday at Apple headquarters, the company also pledged to broaden the way that third-party software programmers can build and sell content for the device.
Among other things, software developers now will be able to create applications that have items for sale within them, such as electronic books or additional levels of a video game. And developers will be able to access the music within users' iPhone libraries, so songs they own can be included in games, for example.
Despite the adulation over the iPhone, which shook up the smart phone market after launching in 2007, many users wondered why it couldn't cut and paste text. Scott Forstall, Apple's senior vice president of iPhone software, said it was "not obvious" how to get past several hurdles, including getting cut and paste to work with the device's touch-screen interface.
Now, Apple said, the third generation of iPhone software, due to be released this summer, will let users copy information from notes and Web pages, and let people move text between different applications. Users who erroneously paste text can shake the iPhone to get an option to cut it.
In another effort to make the device more useful, Apple promises a search function called "Spotlight" that lets people hunt for information in multiple applications at once, including notes, the calendar and iTunes.
The new software will be available in a free download for iPhones. Getting the software on the iPod Touch will cost $9.95.
Apple shares were up $1.77, 1.9 percent, at $97.19 in afternoon trading.

Shimmering from the desert haze of Nevada like a latter-day El Dorado, Las Vegas is the most dynamic, spectacular city on earth. At the start of the twentieth century, it didn't even exist; at the start of the twenty-first, it's home to well over one million people, with enough newcomers arriving to need a new school every month.Las Vegas is not like other cities. No city in history has so explicitly valued the needs of visitors above those of its own population. All its growth has been fueled by tourism, but the tourists haven't spoiled the "real" city; there is no real city. Las Vegas doesn't have fascinating little-known neighborhoods, and it's not a place where visitors can go off the beaten track to have more authentic experiences. Instead, the whole thing is completely self-referential; the reason Las Vegas boasts the vast majority of the world's largest hotels is that around thirty-seven million tourists each year come to see the hotels themselves.

Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 Offers Better Performance
The sheer volume of work that has already gone into the development of Firefox 3.1, which is code-named Shiretoko, makes the new browser feel like much more than a small, incremental improvement over Firefox 3, said Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's director of Firefox development.
For this reason, Beltzner noted, a proposal was put forward at last week's Firefox/Gecko delivery meeting "to change the version number for Shiretoko to Firefox 3.5." If Mozilla decides to adopt the proposal, "the following fourth beta will be numbered Firefox 3.5b4a," Beltzner said.
New Features
The browser's developers have continued to make improvements to the Tracemonkey JavaScript engine, which they say is more stable and faster than previous beta releases. Furthermore, they have added a new capability to the private browsing feature that will give users the ability to select Forget This Site from the application's history sidebar.
Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 also marks the completion of developer changes related to an enhanced scripting feature called "Web worker threads" that gives Web site builders a way to move extensive JavaScript computation to a background thread. This allows the user interface to remain responsive to commands even as the JavaScript engine churns away. Moreover, navigating away from the Web page pauses the computation.
Other notable improvements include a significant upgrade to the Firefox Gecko layout and rendering engine. The plug-in previously required for video and audio elements has been eliminated by adding support for some aspects of the forthcoming HTML 5 spec, which is expected to remain a work in progress for years to come.
Beta 4 Next
The developers of Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 consider the new release stable enough for use by testers committed to providing Mozilla community feedback. However, members non-testers who now use Firefox 3.0 are being cautioned that some add-ons may not work properly with the beta release. Mozilla reports that of the 693 programs that make up 95 percent of the known add-ons now available, only 47 percent are considered compatible with the 3.1 builds.
A fourth beta release of Mozilla's next-generation browser is tentatively slated for release next month, noted Mike Shaver, Mozilla's vice president of engineering. Beta 4 will serve "as a vehicle for more testing of Tracemonkey, video, places and other eagerly-awaited improvements as well as" additional tests based on "feedback from Beta 3," Shaver said. "Analysis of our crash stats and other feedback indicate that we're in a good position with respect to stability and robustness, with key areas easily identified and a good understanding of the work needed to remedy remaining issues."
Still, Mozilla's continuing need for tester feedback has prevented the organization from indicating just when the general public can expect to receive the final build of the new browser, which is based on the Gecko 1.9.1 rendering platform. Given that Beta 3 took months to reach testers, the project has "a lot of changes" and "would benefit from wider feedback," Shaver said.
